Common Reasons for Not Performing Mechanical Thrombectomy in Acute Stroke

In a well-organized regional stroke system, only about 1 in 5 patients were treated with EVT.

Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is a proven treatment for select patients with an acute ischemic stroke and large vessel occlusion (LVO). Although EVT is now commonly employed in comprehensive stroke centers, the reasons for not performing thrombectomy are also of interest. These authors analyzed all stroke code activations over a 6-month period in a region of Spain. They determined the frequency of EVT use for acute stroke and identified modifiable and unmodifiable reasons for not using EVT. Since the study period was in 2018, they assessed patients who could be treated within 8 hours of stroke onset.
