SELFBACK is a decision support system that is being developed by the European Union for self-management of low back pain. Delivered via a smartphone application, it provides weekly evidence-based and individually tailored recommendations for physical activity and strength and flexibility exercises, and daily educational messages. In this trial from Denmark and Norway, 461 adults (mean age, 48) with disability due to nonspecific low back pain were randomized to SELFBACK plus usual care or to usual care alone. All participants had smartphones and email access and had scores of ≥6 points on the 24-point Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMQD).
