Consumption of flavonoids, found in many plants, may influence cognition. To assess whether dietary flavonoids are associated with incident subjective cognitive decline (SCD), researchers retrospectively analyzed data from 49,493 women from the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and 27,842 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS). Flavonoids included flavonols, flavones, flavanones, flavan-3-ols, anthocyanins, polymeric flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins. Long-term average flavonoid intake was determined from semiquantitative food questionnaires starting between 1984 and 1986, repeated every four years. Subjective cognitive decline also was assessed by questionnaire answers obtained between 2008 and 2014.
