Viral meningitis is almost threefold more frequent than bacterial meningitis. Nonpolio enteroviruses are the main cause of viral meningitis worldwide, and young age is an important epidemiologic risk factor. Although the acute phase is generally mild, enterovirus can cause severe central nervous system disease that can be fatal. Encephalitis with parenchymal brain involvement is less frequent than meningitis.
