Observational studies have suggested that influenza vaccine reduces risk for cardiovascular events in patients with underlying cardiovascular disease. Accordingly, investigators conducted a randomized trial comparing influenza vaccine with saline placebo administered shortly after myocardial infarction (MI) or in patients with high-risk but stable coronary artery disease. The vast majority of the 2571 participants were post-MI. Among all participants, mean age was 60 and >80% were male with ST-segment elevation MI (54%–55%), non–ST-segment elevation MI (45%–46%), or stable high-risk coronary artery disease (0.2%–0.5%).
