Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability that frequently affects young people. The degree of recovery after brain injury can be highly variable, with some people regaining near complete function while others remain severely disabled. Understanding which factors influence recovery is important for counseling patients and families and for guiding therapeutic decisions in the acute period of brain injury.
