Humans face two general threats from coronaviruses, such as those that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), COVID-19, and common colds. First, mutations in current human coronaviruses can make them more transmissible and virulent and could allow escape from vaccine protection. Second, bats and other mammals harbor many novel coronaviruses that could jump to humans and produce new human diseases.
