For postmenopausal women receiving treatment for osteoporosis, the Endocrine Society recommends monitoring bone-mineral density (BMD) every 1 to 3 years (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2019; 104:1595), but the value of these serial measurements is unproven. To determine whether serial BMD identified suboptimal responders, researchers retrospectively analyzed a registry of postmenopausal Canadian women who were taking osteoporosis medications.
About 1400 women with osteoporosis underwent baseline BMD measurement followed by two subsequent measurements during treatment with a single medication (80% were taking oral bisphosphates).
