Mucorales fungi are ubiquitous and can cause invasive disease involving the nasopharynx with possible spread to the ocular orbits, cavernous sinus, and brain. The disease is most common in patients with uncontrolled diabetes or immunocompromise. Early diagnosis and treatment with antifungal drugs and surgery to remove foci of infection may halt its spread, but severe morbidity and mortality remain high.
