Agitation in dementia can be challenging. Researchers in the parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center Study of Mirtazapine for Agitated Behaviors in Dementia (SYMBAD) investigated whether mirtazapine could safely and effectively treat agitation in those with possible or probable Alzheimer disease (AD) who did not respond to non-medication strategies.
There were 204 participants (mean age 82 years, 75% female in the mirtazapine group, 58% female in the placebo group) randomized 1:1 to receive a target mirtazapine dose of 45 mg or placebo.
