Health Status Benefit with Empagliflozin in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction

A modest but clinically meaningful improvement in health-related quality of life is shown with use of empagliflozin compared with placebo.

The industry-funded EMPEROR-Preserved (Empagliflozin Outcome Trial in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction; NCT03057951) trial showed that empagliflozin, a sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor, reduced the risk for cardiovascular death or heart failure hospitalization in patients with heart failure with preserved systolic function and a left ventricular ejection fraction >40%. In a secondary analysis, the investigators have evaluated the effect of empagliflozin on health status using the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ).

The participants in the empagliflozin arm were more likely to experience clinically meaningful improvements in health status and less likely to show deterioration. …
