Microsporidiosis (most commonly caused by Enterocytozoon bieneusi) is a diarrheal illness that occurs predominantly in immunocompromised persons; thus, data on its epidemiologic and clinical characteristics are scarce. Now, Michlmayr and colleagues describe a diarrheal outbreak in November 2020 at a company in Denmark. Forty-nine stool samples from 24 persons tested negative for all common pathogens; of these samples, 27 tested positive for E. bieneusi. The cohort comprised 44 probable cases (employees who ate at the company canteen and reported gastrointestinal symptoms), 8 laboratory-confirmed cases (employees whose stools tested positive for E. bieneusi between November 4 and December 13), and 143 uninfected controls.
