With multiple waves of the COVID-19 pandemic evolving, it has become evident that individuals can become infected despite complete vaccination. In an analysis of nationwide data in Israel, researchers used a test negative study design to assess risk for infection in 83,057 adults after complete immunization with two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine. Those with COVID-19 diagnosed before the study period were excluded.
Between May 15 and September 17, 2021, 9.6% of participants tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR. Of 113 isolates, sequencing revealed the Delta variant in 93.0%.
