Waning antibody levels against SARS-CoV-2 following natural infection or immunization have worrisome clinical implications. But current antibody levels are just one defense against infection.
Investigators studied 61 people who received two doses of mRNA vaccines and found that mRNA vaccination promptly induced robust levels of antispike, anti–receptor-binding domain, and neutralizing antibodies, although those levels waned substantially in the next 6 months. Reassuringly, however, vaccination also induced memory B cells. When those cells were stimulated by infection with the Alpha, Beta, or Delta variants, they promptly increased production of effective antibodies against those variants.
