The new standard of care first-line treatment for advanced hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is the combination of atezolizumab and bevacizumab, which replaced first-line sorafenib or lenvatinib. The combination of ipilimumab and nivolumab received regulatory approval for HCC based on phase 2 evaluation.
Investigators now report results of an international, industry-sponsored, open-label phase 3 trial comparing nivolumab to sorafenib in the first-line treatment of advanced HCC. Patients with Child-Pugh class A HCC who had not received prior systemic therapy were randomized to nivolumab 240 mg intravenously every 2 weeks or sorafenib 400 mg orally twice daily.
