The accuracy of clinical diagnosis of vaginitis is limited. In this manufacturer-sponsored, multicenter U.S. study, 469 participants who were undergoing evaluation for vaginitis had an additional swab sent for a commercially available and previously validated vaginal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) panel assay (BD MAX; NEJM JW Womens Health Jul 2017 and Obstet Gynecol 2017; 130:181]). The assay is designed to detect the three most common causes of vaginitis (i.e., bacterial vaginosis [BV] markers, Candida species, and Trichomonas vaginalis) with results within 12 hours.
