Sports-related sudden cardiac death accounts for a minority of sudden cardiac deaths but generates relatively greater media attention and soul searching because of the expected robust health of athletes. To examine trends in incidence, management, and outcomes of sports-related sudden cardiac arrests, researchers analyzed data from a prospective registry of sudden cardiac arrests occurring between 2005 and 2018 in the Paris area.
They identified 377 sports-related sudden cardiac arrests — defined as those occurring during or within 1 hour after recreational or competitive sports activity — among individuals aged 18 to 75 years.
