Because of continuing concern that patients with undetected atrial fibrillation (AF) might suffer clinical harm, the USPSTF commissioned an update to its 2018 review of data about screening for AF in older adults (NEJM JW Cardiol Dec 2018 and JAMA 2018; 320:478). The Task Force committed to update its prior “insufficient-evidence” (I) statement because of the availability of new screening modalities, a 2020 recommendation favoring screening from the European Society for Cardiology (ESC), and recent publication of two major randomized screening trials.
