The prevalence of gout among women has increased substantially in recent decades. Compared with gout in men, gout in women is more likely to be associated with coronary heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and other comorbidities. However, whether a healthful diet confers lower risk for gout in women is unclear. In this prospective cohort study, researchers determined the associations between guideline-based healthful eating patterns and risk for gout in 80,000 female Nurses' Health Study participants without gout at baseline. Participants completed food frequency questionnaires every 2 years between 1984 and 2018.
