Phenoconversion from Idiopathic REM Sleep Behavior Disorder

Potential demographic, lifestyle, and environmental risk factors are identified for phenoconversion from idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder to a neurodegenerative disease.

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) may occur years before onset of cognitive and motor symptoms in synucleinopathies such as Parkinson disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), or multiple system atrophy (MSA). Researchers conducted this multicenter, prospective cohort study to determine risk factors for phenoconversion in polysomnography-confirmed idiopathic RBD (iRBD). Participants free of parkinsonism and dementia completed a baseline survey of potential risk factors including demographics, lifestyle risk factors, exposure history, comorbid conditions, body-mass index, family history, and medication.
