Many older U.S. adults report financial strain, which is associated with worse mental and physical health and lower adherence to medications. In this study, researchers determined whether financial strain is associated with elevated risk for death among older adults recovering from acute myocardial infarctions (MIs).
From 2013 to 2017, data were collected on 2851 U.S. adults (age, ≥75) in a geographically diverse, prospective cohort study (SILVER-AMI). At the time of MI admission, 65% of participants reported no financial strain, 28% had moderate strain (i.e., just enough money to make ends meet), and 7% reported severe strain (i.e., can't make ends meet).
