In the U.S., asthma mortality has improved overall since 2001 but has increased among Black and Puerto Rican patients. This difference likely is due to differential healthcare access including overuse of albuterol and underuse of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). Researchers examined a strategy of using an ICS every time rescue albuterol is used in a Black and Latinx population with moderate-to-severe asthma.
In an open-label, 15-month, pragmatic study, 1200 adults were assigned randomly to inhaled beclomethasone (80 µg) or placebo every time they used their rescue inhaler in addition to their usual asthma care.
