Nurse practitioners and physician assistants — collectively, advanced practice providers (APPs) — provide care in >80% of U.S. hospital medicine groups; however, APP training for hospitalist practice is inconsistent. Investigators piloted a 17-item milestone-based tool (derived from internal medicine residency milestones and hospitalist core competencies) to allow supervising hospitalist physicians to assess APPs' readiness to practice hospital medicine.
