COVID-19 Vaccine Efficacy Against Hospitalization in Children and Adolescents During the Delta and Omicron Periods

Vaccine efficacy against hospitalization was lower during Omicron compared with Delta, but excellent protection against severe illness and death was maintained.

COVID-19 vaccines are currently approved for use in children aged 5 years and older. Initial studies demonstrating efficacy, performed in the Delta era, showed excellent protection against infection, hospitalization, and severe disease. Clinical outcomes in children hospitalized with COVID-19 during the Delta surge have been reported (NEJM JW Infect Dis Mar 2022 and MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2021; 70:1766), but there is less information about vaccine efficacy and duration of protection against new viral variants.
