Sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are now established therapies to reduce morbidity and mortality from chronic heart failure (HF) across the spectrum of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Researchers have now assessed how the SGLT-2 inhibitor empagliflozin affects health status (symptoms, physical function, and quality of life) when initiated during an acute HF event. They conducted a secondary analysis of data from 530 participants (mean age, 69 years; 34% women; 33% with a first HF event) who had been hospitalized with acute HF in the manufacturer-funded EMPULSE trial (NCT0415775).
