Large randomized trials have shown that some sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors — specifically dapagliflozin and empagliflozin — improve relevant outcomes (e.g., first hospitalization, mortality) in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), regardless of diabetes status (NEJM JW Gen Med Jan 1 2021). In a new patient-level meta-analysis, researchers identified eight randomized trials (with >15,000 patients) to assess the effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors (i.e., canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin, or sotagliflozin) in patients with HFrEF or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and with or without diabetes.
