Depression is estimated to occur in about 25% to 35% of individuals after a stroke. Presence of depression may impair stroke recovery and is associated with reduced quality of life. How often depression is being treated in the period following stroke has been understudied. In this analysis, researchers used cross-sectional data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, a nationally representative survey. They studied trends in poststroke depression treatment over the years 2004 through 2017 and made comparisons to a group of patients without stroke.
Overall, 10,243 patients were included; 36% were ≥75 years old, 55% were women, 24% were non-Hispanic Black or Hispanic, 43% had low income, and 49% were publicly insured or uninsured. During th…
