In the largest randomized trial to date of patients with mild asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism, 191 Scandinavian patients were assigned to parathyroidectomy or observation without surgery. Initial results, published in 2007, suggested no clinically important differences in outcomes after 2 years of follow-up (NEJM JW Gen Med Jun 15 2007 and J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2007; 92:1687). Now, the researchers have provided long-term follow-up data in two publications.
