Human adenoviruses are common pathogens with many serotypes targeting different types of cells and tissues. In children — most of whom are infected before adolescence — upper and lower respiratory, gastrointestinal, corneal, and urinary tract infections are common. Altered adenoviruses have been used as vaccine and gene vectors with variable results. Notably, adenovirus is a common pathogen in liver transplant patients.
Between October 2021 and February 2022, clinicians at a children's hospital in Alabama identified 9 cases of hepatitis associated with human adenovirus type 41 viremia.
