While numerous reports have described prolonged symptoms after COVID-19, the pathogenesis of post-acute sequalae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) remain unknown. NIH researchers now report early findings of an ongoing longitudinal study of PASC.
Participants included 189 self-referred adults with recent COVID-19 and 120 without a history of the illness. Patients in the COVID-19 cohort were a median 149 days post–COVID-19 symptom onset and ≥6 weeks post-infection; of these, 12% had been hospitalized for COVID-19. Among the COVID-19 cohort, 55% had at ≥1 symptom of PASC; fatigue, parasomnia, concentration or memory impairment, headache, insomnia, chest discomfort, and anxiety were most common.
