Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that has been associated with repetitive traumatic brain injury experienced in sport and military service. The initial symptoms of this condition are insidious and consist of irritability, impulsivity, aggression, depression, short-term memory loss, and suicidality. These symptoms can progress over years to a severe cognitive deficit and dementia. Military personnel who are exposed to combat can develop neuropsychiatric sequelae which have been attributed in some cases to CTE.
