Since most patients enrolled in trials of antithrombotic therapy for secondary stroke prevention are older, the validity of extrapolations to young stroke patients is unclear, especially since both the risks for bleeding and recurrent ischemic events and the balance between these risks may be distinct and accrue over many more years.
To assess bleeding and secondary stroke in younger patients, investigators analyzed a subset of 544 patients aged 18 to 50 years from the FUTURE (Follow-Up of Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke Patients and Unelucidated Risk Factor Evaluation) Study, including 185 with transient ischemic attack (TIA; 34%) and 359 with first ischemic stroke (66%).
