The two mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer/BioNTech's BNT162b2 and Moderna's mRNA-1273) were approved on the basis of individual safety and performance metrics, but the public often must choose between them, and little good comparative data informs this choice. In a retrospective study, U.S. Veterans Affairs researchers analyzed postvaccine medical events among almost 450,000 veterans (median age, 69; 93% men; 30% Black or Hispanic) who received one of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines before September 2021. Almost all recipients (98%) received both doses of vaccine according to usual protocols. Individuals in the two groups were matched in pairs for common comorbidities.
