In 2012, the Endocrine Society published its initial guideline on managing hyperglycemia in noncritically ill hospitalized patients (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2012; 97:16). This guideline updates those recommendations.
For insulin-dosing adjustments in patients with diabetes who already are being treated with insulin as outpatients, real-time continuous glucose monitoring with confirmatory bedside point-of-care blood glucose testing is suggested instead of bedside glucose testing alone.
