Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is a common and disabling condition in neurology practice. Standard treatments to date are unsatisfactory. For non-NLUTD, sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a well-established treatment. By contrast, insufficient randomized controlled trials have been done to show benefits for NLUTD. Researchers conducted this sham-controlled, double-blind, multicenter trial between June 2012 and June 2017, recruiting 124 patients with symptomatic refractory NLUTD: 47 with urgency, 38 with retention, and 39 with a combination. After lead placement into the sacral foramina S3, all patients underwent SNM testing. If successful, the neurostimulator was placed permanently.
