Risk for Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome Varies with SARS-CoV-2 Variant

In a study in Germany, incidence of PIMS was 86% lower with Omicron than Alpha, regardless of age and probably independent of vaccination status.

Pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS; also known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children [MIS-C]) is a systemic hyperinflammatory condition that may affect children and adolescents up to 4 weeks after COVID-19. Using national registry data in Germany, researchers examined the incidence of PIMS associated with specific SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) between March 2021 and April 2022. During this time, regular mandatory testing of children and teens was in effect throughout Germany. Beginning in August 2021, COVID-19 vaccination was recommended for those aged 12 to 17 years, reaching 60% coverage by the end of the study period. No general vaccination recommendation was in effect for children younger than 12.
