Does Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Mitigate COVID-19 Outcomes in Men with HIV?

In an observational U.S. study, treatment with TDF was associated with lower risk for COVID-19 infection and hospital admission than treatment with TAF.

As an antiviral for treating patients with HIV, tenofovir also has been studied in the context of COVID-19. Now, researchers for the Veterans Aging Cohort Study have evaluated the effects of various nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) regimens (tenofovir alafenamide and emtricitabine [TAF/FTC], tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine [TDF/FTC], abacavir and lamivudine [ABC/3TC], and other NRTI-backbone combinations) on risk for and outcomes of COVID-19 in men aged >18 with adequate HIV control, CD4+ cell and HIV levels measured within the previous 12 months, and no prior SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination from February 2020 to October 2021.
