Status migrainosus (SM) is a well-recognized complication of migraine in which pain and associated symptoms last for more than 72 hours and are debilitating. However, the epidemiology of SM in the general population has not been well characterized.
Investigators have now conducted a retrospective, 7-year study (2012–2017) of 237 care-seeking individuals with incident SM (median age, 35; 89% female; 84% white) in the Rochester Epidemiology Project database of residents in Olmstead County, MN. The goal of the study was to determine the rate of incident SM, the clinical characteristics of the condition, and the recurrence rate at 1 year following the incident event.
