Although transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is now the predominant treatment for patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis, there are few data comparing long-term outcomes of TAVR versus surgery. A manufacturer-funded, randomized study comparing a self-expanding TAVR prosthesis with surgery in 1660 patients at intermediate surgical risk demonstrated similar outcomes at 2 years (NEJM JW Cardiol May 2017 and N Engl J Med 2017; 376:1321). Now, the investigators report the 5-year outcomes of this trial.
The mean age of patients was 80 years, 44% were women, and the mean Society of Thoracic Surgery Predicted Risk of Mortality score was 4.5%. Patients underwent procedures between 2012 and 2016, and most TAVR patients (84%) recei…
