Most exercise guidelines for older adults (age, ≥65) focus on moderate-to-vigorous aerobic physical activity to prevent early mortality and on muscle strengthening activities to prevent falls. In this study, researchers used a U.S. national health interview database to explore survival benefits of muscle strengthening activities in 115,000 community-dwelling older adults. Muscle-strengthening activity was categorized into one of four levels (from 0 to 28 sessions weekly), as was moderate-to-vigorous aerobic physical activity (from <10 to >300 minutes weekly).
