After transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor ischemic stroke, short- and long-term risks are elevated for cardiovascular events, including recurrent stroke. Whether recurrent strokes and other factors lead to an elevated long-term risk for disability is less clear. Now, this question has been addressed in an industry-funded study by investigators from TIAregistry.org, a prospective international registry of patients aged 18 or older with a TIA or minor ischemic stroke within the previous 7 days recruited from 61 centers in 21 countries. Functional outcome was captured by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score, which ranges from 0, indicating no disability to 5, indicating constant nursing care and 6, indicating death.
