Crossword puzzles often are recommended to maintain or improve cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In this study, U.S. researchers explored the effect of computer-based crossword puzzles, compared with other types of Web-based games, on cognitive function. A total of 107 adults (mean age, 71) with MCI were randomized to intensive training and testing with Web-based crossword puzzles of medium difficulty (equivalent to Thursday puzzles in the New York Times) or to other types of Web-based games (i.e., memory and matching tasks, spatial recognition, and processing speed tasks).
