Mucormycosis (infection with molds from the Mucorales order) is seen most often in patients with conditions such as neutropenia, uncontrolled diabetes, major traumatic injury, and hematologic malignancies. Healthcare-associated mucormycosis (HCM) is more unusual but has been associated with fungal spore contamination of hospital supplies, linens, or ventilation systems. Between January 2017 and June 2021 at one large U.S. hospital, 30 patients had diagnoses of mucormycosis; of these, 17 had confirmed or probable HCM.
