Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has a long history in association with AIDS, starting with initial concerns about causation, significant contribution to AIDS-related morbidity and mortality, and linkage with ongoing inflammation. Now, investigators at a single hospital in China retrospectively analyzed 182-day mortality in HIV-infected adults admitted between 2017 and 2021; at this hospital, patients with CD4 counts <200 cells/mm3 had routine measurement of CMV DNA in peripheral blood leukocytes. CMV DNA levels were stratified into 3 levels: below the limit of quantification (<500 IU/mL), low (500–10,000 IU/mL), and high (>10,000 IU/mL).
