As zoonoses are increasingly identified, it has become apparent that SARS-CoV-2 was initially spread from animals to humans. However, the ancient domestication of dogs (and cats) has yielded a situation in which a few viral diseases can now be now spread back and forth between humans and their pets. In a cross-sectional community-based study in Idaho and Washington, investigators examined the rate at which dogs and cats belonging to owners with previous diagnoses of COVID-19 developed illness consistent with the disease (breathing difficulty, cough, lassitude, appetite changes, and serologic or nucleic acid–based test positivity).
