Burkholderia bacterial species are resistant to many antimicrobials. In July 2021, an outbreak of B. stabilis intravascular infection involved 8 inpatients at hospital A in Virginia. Almost all had undergone ultrasound-guided procedures before the infection; in all procedures, a nonsterile ultrasound gel (MediChoice M500812) manufactured by Eco-Med Pharmaceutical was used. Cultures of several unopened gel containers indicated contamination with high titers of B. stabilis identical to organisms recovered from patients. Within the same month, hospital B (in Philadelphia) reported 7 similar bloodstream infections in which B. stabilis almost identical to the Virginia strain was identified.
