Psychosocial stress is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular events, including stroke. To study this association in an international population and examine potential modifiers of the association, investigators analyzed data from a retrospective case-control study of risk factors for first acute stroke conducted in 32 countries around the world.
Over 13,000 participants with a first ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke and control participants matched by age, sex, and region were asked about home, work, and financial stress, and about stressful life events, in the previous year.
