Initial investigation of monkeypox virus (renamed mpox virus [MPXV]) indicated that unprotected sexual activity, especially among men who have sex with men, was the primary mode of transmission. Fomites subsequently were shown to harbor and spread this infection (NEJM JW Infect Dis Sep 2022 and Emerg Infect Dis 2022 Aug 11; [e-pub]). Now, two other practices leading to transmission have been identified.
From July 6 to 19, 2022, twenty-one instances of MPXV infection occurred in the clients of a single tattoo and body piercing parlor in Spain, representing 36% of the 58 clients during that period.
