A retrospective study of adults who have undergone epilepsy surgery identifies risk factors for seizure recurrence after medication withdrawal.
Which risk factors can predict seizure recurrence following medication withdrawal after epilepsy surgery? Researchers conducted a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study of 850 adults from 9 tertiary epilepsy centers who had undergone surgery for medically refractory epilepsy. The authors used survival analysis to identify characteristics associated with seizure recurrence after medication withdrawal in 350 patients in the cohort and then validated these characteristics in the remaining patients. The endpoint was any seizure type other than nonmotor focal aware seizures (i.e., having International League Against Epilepsy class 3–6 seizures). Candidate patient characteristics were identified from prior literature in this field.
