The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgical Database is often utilized to estimate the risk of surgery for patients with mitral regurgitation (MR) but previously lacked information on MR etiology and mechanism of repair. With these elements and procedural details recently added to the database, researchers reevaluated the operative risk in >50,000 patients undergoing nonemergent mitral valve repair of primary MR at >800 hospitals between 2014 and 2020.
Patients' average age was 64 years and 38% were women. Overall operative mortality was 1.2%, and older patients and women were at higher risk. The rate of conversion to mitral valve replacement was 6.4%, and these patients had higher mortality (3.2%) and stroke incidence (2.4%; vs.…
